Simple Steps to Build Confidence
If you follow me on other platforms, you know I talk a lot about confidence and how it can either help us or hinder us. These conversations keep coming up for me with both my clients, my family and even with myself. Sometimes it’s not as simple as stepping out in the world and putting on that confident smile – fake it til ya make it kind of deal. It’s complex and even this one blog post isn’t going to scratch the surface.
Let’s just take a moment to remember that it’s totally normal to have these ups and downs and I don’t believe that anybody feels 100% every single day of the year. What I do think is important is that we strive for balance and not letting ourselves go too far in either way! A knock to our confidence can cause us to pull back from things that we’re working on, the things we love and honestly, low confidence or imposter syndrome can seriously damper your progress.
So when low confidence hinders us, what do we do about it to get through that obstacle and go back to thriving? It’s not a one answer that fits every circumstance, but I think there are some actions to take that build over time to help move you into a more consistent space for feeling fabulous and ready to take on the world. I’ll share a few tools that have helped me cope over the years. Here are some simple steps to build confidence:
1. Keeping solid factual reminders of what it looks like and feels like when things are going well. It could be feedback received, a project you’re proud of or anything that reminds you what you want to feel more of.
2. Do more of the things that make you feel good. It could be eating well or training toward a goal that you have but things that make you feel that you have progress toward the big picture.
3. Celebrate the little wins. Everyone has a big goal and when as above, when we are making progress towards it, it’s time to celebrate. That helps push your actions consistently toward being in an overall confident place.
4. Surround yourself with good people. Honestly… this should probably be number one on the list. Because I hear it far too often that the people in regular company are the ones that seem to pull down the confidence and make you question your value. Surround yourself with people that are supportive, that give you good honest feedback but don’t make you feel bad! Let those ones go no matter what!
5. Take a break, reflect on who you are and who you want to be and where you are in relation to those goals. It can help you set out a roadmap on how to get there, but also help you really look at how far you’ve come over the years.
6. Lastly, it may sound cliché, but take those little steps or do those little things that scare you. It doesn’t have to be every day. But make the call, ask the question, put yourself out there for opportunities, be bold. As long as it’s true to who you are. Own it. Do not stand in your own way.
Look, releasing music, making art… hell, even this blog are all extremely vulnerable things. You share a piece of your soul with the world and hope that someone else enjoys that piece of your soul too. Sometimes, it doesn’t lant and it’s easy to get knocked down. The secret is that you can pick yourself up, and don’t let those knocks to your confidence remain constant. Instead, learn to use them as fire and strength to become bolder and true to the art. That’s where the power lays!
